A reminder that not all the snakes are two-legged:
But some of them are, so I am all kinds of cautious when on a road trip.
One of the places I stayed was a 4-star hotel on the beach but my resting place the night before had no stars at all, unless you give them a quarter star for the low price. But the difference between that and the cheapest other motel in the area paid for a very nice dinner. They didn't look like the lap of luxory either.
There may be a few other places along I5 where you can get a room for $25/night, but I cannot think of any. After confessing that I awoke a couple times in the night to turn on the light and check for bugs (there weren't any), I should say that the room was clean, the staff friendly and helpful and overall it wasn't a bad experience.
Now in my experience, most no-frills motels short-sheet you. So I just ask for an extra sheet at check-in. The length of the sheets was no problem in this motel, though, because they matched the length of the bed, which was short...and squat.
As far as I know, I've never been bitten by a bed bug, nor even seen one except in photos. Here is one: A Bed Bug
